CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT

Chiropractic is a healthcare discipline and profession that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. A hands-on, non-invasive, and drug-free practice that safely and effectively helps relieve pain and improve the body’s overall function; uses various treatments depending on your needs, from manual ‘hands-on’ adjustment techniques to soft tissue therapy. Following a thorough review of a patient’s history and diagnosis, a chiropractor can create a comprehensive treatment plan, recommend therapeutic exercises, and/or other non-invasive, drug-free therapies.

  • No. Chiropractors are legislated as “primary contact” health care professionals. This means that you do not have to be referred to a Chiropractor by a family physician or anybody else – you can consult them directly. However, some third party insurance carriers may require a referral from a family physician for insurance claim reimbursements.

  • Chiropractic services are not covered under OHIP. However, many extended health care plans do cover a portion of Chiropractic services.

  • Due to the inflammation within the joints and the muscles, on occasion, there may be some temporary discomfort during or after an adjustment. However, by sticking to the assigned treatment plan, you will feel more relaxed and will eventually be able to move pain free!

  • A popular therapeutic procedure performed by Chiropractors is known as “spinal manipulation,” but it is more commonly referred to as an “adjustment.” An adjustment is a low-risk procedure where the Chiropractor applies a controlled force to a joint that is restricted or is not moving properly. The purpose of the adjustment is to restore mobility to the restricted joint, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.

Chiropractic spinal manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient.

  • When a Chiropractor performs an adjustment, a pressure difference is created within the synovial joint. Gasses are released which cause an audible sound to be heard. The bones themselves are not breaking or cracking. It’s exactly the same as when you “crack” your knuckles!

  • Chiropractor’s use drug-free, non-invasive therapy to restore motion to dysfunctional spinal or extremity joints, while treating the involved muscles and surrounding soft tissues.

  • The duration of chiropractic care varies with respect to your symptom(s), age, prior health history, and the severity of your issue. No two patients are alike, as physical response to treatments differ between individuals. In addition, a chiropractor may recommend acute, preventative, and/or maintenance care, thus making a certain number of visits necessary.

CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT (CCMI)

North GTA Rehab is in partnership with the Complete Concussion Management™ group. As concussions have become the focus for both professional and amateur athletes around the world, we at North GTA Rehab Centre wanted to be at the forefront of concussion diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation. With our collaboration and education through Complete Concussion Management™ we now offer the very best in research-proven concussion treatments and rehabilitation.

  • Complete Concussion Management™ is a concussion research company that educates healthcare practitioners on cutting-edge concussion therapies and management strategies based on the most current medical research so that they may provide the highest quality of concussion treatment and follow-up outside of professional sports.

Certified Complete Concussion Management™ practitioners are continuously updated on current research and treatments in order to manage these injuries properly and safely to ensure adequate recovery, thereby limiting the risk of further injury and long-term brain damage.

  • A concussion can be simply defined as a disruption in neurological functioning following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body. This causes a biochemical imbalance within brain cells as well as decreased blood flow and temporary energy deficits within the brain.

Following a suspected concussion, a player should be immediately removed from play, assessed and placed on complete rest in order to recover from the energy deficit. Studies have shown that any activity, both mental and physical, in the immediate days following concussion can delay the process of recovery and should be avoided until the athlete is completely symptom free.

  • The biggest concern surrounding concussions comes from the energy deficit that occurs in the brain following injury. When the brain is in this low energy state, it has been well established that the brain is extremely vulnerable to additional trauma, where even smaller impacts can lead to another concussion; and these second concussions can cause severe brain injuries with potentially permanent or fatal outcomes.

The problem is that symptoms (meaning how someone feels) do not coincide with brain recovery. The only way to know when the brain has fully recovered and out of this “vulnerable period” is to compare current brain function to when the individual was healthy; this is what is known as a “baseline test”.

A baseline test is a battery of tests that measures every area of brain function that could potentially become affected following a concussion (you need more than computer tests!!). The reason that the test is termed a “baseline” is because it is done BEFORE the athlete gets injured. In order to know when an athlete has fully recovered, we first have to know where they were when they were healthy. Without having this information, there is no way to truly know when an athlete has fully recovered and is safe to return to their sport.

Baseline testing is the most important thing to get done prior to beginning your sports season on a yearly basis.

    • The most comprehensive baseline testing (individual & team / group testing available)

    • Post-injury diagnosis and injury management

    • Concussion rehabilitation for chronic symptoms (Post-Concussion Syndrome)

    • Coach & trainer education and certification programs

  • Complete Concussion Management™ is the largest network of specialized concussion clinics in all of Canada. Athletes tested through our program can have preferential access to any CCM certified clinic across the country. All of these clinics have received the same training, are conducting the same tests, and using the exact same equipment. This means that if you are baseline tested in your town and you are out of town for a tournament and you get a possible concussion, you can walk into that clinic and be tested and compared against YOUR OWN baseline!

PELVIC FLOOR PHYSIOTHERAPY

Pelvic floor dysfunction affects so many people, but most Canadians aren’t getting the proper medical attention due to shame and the fear of embarrassment. If you suffer from pelvic floor dysfunction, know that you are not alone. Conditions associated with pelvic floor dysfunctions are common and treatable.

  • Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy, also known as pelvic therapy, is the assessment and treatment of various conditions involving the pelvic floor muscles and the surrounding areas. These groups of muscles are important for bladder and bowel control, sexual function, healthy pregnancies, spine stability, and more. Pelvic therapy can help treat the various conditions that cause pain and discomfort in the pelvic area of the body.

Pelvic physiotherapists are specially trained to evaluate the bones and muscles of your lower back, your hips, your sacroiliac joint, as well as your pelvic floor muscles. These rehabilitative health care professionals develop individualized care plans for their clients, to provide treatment and exercise programs that help manage pain and discomfort in the pelvic region.

Pelvic physiotherapy may also be part of a treatment plan that involves your primary care physician, sex therapists, and mental health therapists.

    • Pelvic floor dysfunction

    • Hypotonic pelvic floor disfunction

    • Urinary incontinence

    • Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP)

    • Hypertonic Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

    • Dyspareunia

    • Vaginismus

    • Vulvodynia

    • Pudendal Neuralgia

    • Chronic Prostatitis

  • Our pelvic rehabilitation program will involve an exam of the muscles and connective tissues of the abdomen, buttocks, and inner thighs, and often an internal exam to assess the tone, strength and endurance of the pelvic floor group of muscles. It has been said that assessing the pelvic floor without an internal exam is like an orthopedic surgeon examining the knee through a pair of jeans—highly inefficient, and it would be difficult to determine how those tissues are working. An internal examination of the pelvic floor muscles is the gold standard.

The individualized treatment may also involve:

    Comprehensive education

Soft tissue release of internal pelvic floor muscles

    Muscle re-education

    Bladder retraining

Strengthening of the pelvic floor muscles

EMG/biofeedback or electrical stimulation as required

By treating and educating patients in pelvic health dysfunction and targeted pelvic floor physiotherapy, we hope to empower individuals to find real-life, conservative solutions for pelvic pain, pelvic girdle problems, painful intercourse, bladder and bowel incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.

ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT

Acupuncture is among the oldest healing practices in the world. It aims to restore and maintain health through the stimulation of specific points on the body.

Acupuncture consists of a series of procedures involving the stimulation of anatomical points on the body using a variety of techniques. The acupuncture technique that has been most often studied scientifically involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation.

  • More often than not, the sensation that is felt from the insertion of an acupuncture needle into the skin can be related to that of a pinch. However, in some cases, a patient does not feel anything at all. Once the needles are in the acupuncture points, a patient may experience feelings of warmth, numbness, itchiness, or heaviness. Again, sometimes, a patient does not feel anything at all. All of this is normal. The needles are usually left in place for about 15 – 45 minutes.

  • North GTA Rehab uses pre-sterilized, single-use, disposable acupuncture needles on our patients. After the needles have been removed, we dispose of them immediately and safely.

  • Once the needles are inserted into the acupuncture point, it may be there for 10-20 minutes. Treatment times vary for different individuals and symptoms.

  • It may be unsafe for some patients to receive acupuncture treatment.

Please advise us if any of the following conditions apply to you:

SPINAL DECOMPRESSION THERAPY & TREATMENT

Over a decade ago, NASA noticed that astronauts were relieved of low back pain when they were in anti-gravity environments. They found that spinal disc heights were increased during space missions. With these scientific findings, a new technology was developed called Spinal Decompression Therapy.

  • Decompression machines are specialized, motorized traction devices that allow your healthcare provider to position your spine and target an area for decompression therapy. They work by gently stretching your spine.

This “stretch” creates negative pressure within your spinal disc and allows disc material that was herniated or protruded to be pulled back into the disc. It also helps promote the movement of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the discs so they can heal.

  • Wondering if spinal decompression therapy is for you? Consider trying this type of therapy if you have:

    • Suffered back or neck pain for over one week

    • Sciatica

    • Bulging or herniated discs

    • Degenerative disc disease

    • Worn spinal joints (called posterior facet syndrome)

    • Injured or diseased spinal nerve roots (called radiculopathy)

  • Spinal decompression therapy is a non-invasive, all natural and safe treatment. You are fully clothed during the treatment. Your healthcare provider will fit you with two harnesses and instruct you to lie down on the computer-controlled table. The computer settings are then customized to your specific condition.

  • While spinal decompression therapy can treat a wide variety of conditions, it is not recommended for certain people. It is not recommended for pregnant women, patients who have severe osteoporosis, severe obesity or severe nerve damage. It is also not recommended if you have had spinal surgery with instrumentation (screws, metal plates or cages).

For most patients, spinal decompression is a safe and effective therapy. Your healthcare provider can help you decide if spinal decompression is right for you and your specific condition.

  • In a recent study of Spinal Decompression Therapy 219 patients who had at least 4 weeks of symptoms from either degenerative disc disease or herniated disc were treated. The results were amazing! 86% reported immediate symptom relief and 84% were still pain free 90 days after their treatment was completed

  • If you’re concerned this type of therapy will cause pain, you can rest assured that in almost all cases, the treatments are completely painless and most people even notice a reduction of pain during their sessions. In fact, some patients are so comfortable they even fall asleep!

  • Individual sessions of spinal decompression therapy typically last 20-30 minutes. To achieve long term health benefits, you will require several sessions. Your healthcare provider can develop a treatment plan that meets your goals based on your specific condition.

  • It is important to note that spinal decompression is not the same and has some advantages over traditional traction. Regular traction stretches your spine and muscles simultaneously. If you only stretch the spine, your body naturally “braces” for the next stretch reducing the ability for the treatment to be effective. This “overall stretching” commonly used in traction can also trigger painful muscle spasms.

  • While it is an effective method of treatment for many conditions including back and neck pain, spinal decompression therapy is generally only one part of your overall treatment plan. There are other therapies your healthcare provider may recommend to help speed up your healing process. These often include: ice or heat therapy, chiropractic adjustments and/or active rehabilitation to strengthen spinal muscles.

LOW LASER THERAPY &
COLD LASER THERAPY

PHOTOBIOSTIMULATION

  • Low-level laser therapy, also termed photo-biostimulation, is simply defined as light exciting or activating cells. The application of red and near infrared light over injuries or wounds to improve soft tissue healing and relieve both acute and chronic pain. Low level laser therapy is clinically proven to improve blood circulation, promotes anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous and analgesic effects and stimulates wound healing.

    • Acute or chronic inflammation

    • Arthritis

    • Repetitive sprain / strain injuries

    • Spinal pain

    • Soft tissue injuries; headaches, shoulder pain, low back, sciatic pain, knee pain, neck pain

    • Tendonitis

  • Theralase is a form of cold laser therapy that has a proven track record to help patients with a wide array of health conditions and pain. This cold laser therapy aids the body’s natural ability to heal itself using a combination of electric stimulation and cold laser technology. Theralase is a light-emitting device that can be used on many areas of the body.

    • Neck and back pain

    • Arthritis

    • Tendonitis

    • Sprains

    • Carpal tunnel syndrome

    • Wounds

    • Shoulder and neck injuries

    • Muscle and joint pain

    • Healing neural musculoskeletal conditions through pain elimination

Theralase cold lasers penetrate up to 10 cm (4 in) below the skin surface which is deeper than any other therapies; and it heals tissue faster than any other cold laser on the market.

When used in conjunction with photodynamic compounds, Theralase cold laser therapy has the ability to destroy cancer cells, fat cells, unhealthy bacteria and viruses.

Theralase technology was founded in 1994 and has made great advancements in treatment for people and uses in equine applications.

GRASTON TECHNIQUE: SOFT TISSUE AND SCAR TISSUE TREATMENT

Graston is a patented therapy that incorporates stainless steel instruments that are used to break down scar tissue, fascial restrictions and release deep soft tissue ailments that may be restricting normal body range of motion.  The treatment technique utilizes specialized instruments to detect the cause of your symptoms and efficiently treat the area.

  • If you have suffered limitations or restrictions in daily living due to scar tissue build up from previous injuries or improper body mechanics and /or posture.

  • Graston® Technique utilizes stainless steel instruments that are applied with controlled pressure and dig deep into the tissue to reduce inflammation and breakdown scar tissue, resulting in pain relief and regaining range of motion and function.

  • There are various amounts of pain or discomfort experienced during treatment itself. The pain varies between patients and some bruising or soreness may be experienced after treatment, but it is a part of the normal healing process. The soreness generally subsides quickly and it is recommended to ice for 20 minutes at home after the treatment.

  • Treatment times vary from individual to individual and symptoms and conditions. Typically, a Graston® session could take 2 to 10 minutes.

    • Achilles Tendinosis/itis

    • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

    • Cervical Sprain/Strain (Neck Pain)

SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

Shockwave therapy delivers a series of high-energy percussion to the affected area using a physical shock, not an electric one. Shockwave therapy produces an inflammatory response in which the body responds by increasing metabolic activity in the area of the pain. This stimulates the healing process and actually accelerates it as well. Shockwaves can break down scar tissue and perhaps calcification. At Chiro-Med Rehab Centre we utilize the Zimmer Shockwave Therapy System.

  • Every person is different due to the level of pain they are experiencing so there may be some discomfort during treatment. The intensity of the treatment is adjustable at the beginning of each session so that the patient can experience some analgesic effects.

  • Each session lasts between five and ten minutes. Most conditions require four to eight sessions and these are done anywhere from three to ten days apart depending on the patient’s tissue response and their tolerance.

  • Shockwave therapy is covered by most insurance companies. For those without insurance coverage treatment is affordable.

    • Plantar Fasciitis
